Presentation Stoutness has risen as the most squeezing healthful issue confronting the created world. This pattern has happened over a generally brief timeframe; in the United States, it seems to have started in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The scourge in youngsters followed presently. The latest information (19992000) from national studies in the United States propose that right around 66% of the grown-up populace is overweight, and very nearly 33% is hefty (Flegal et.al, pp. 1724). In kids, current assessments (19992000) put the commonness of overweight at 15%, a triple increment in the course of recent years (Ogden et.al, pp. 1729). In spite of the fact that this pandemic has saved no subgroup of the populace and has been reported in people all things considered and racial/ethnic and financial subgroups, the issue is most noteworthy in minority populaces and among people living in destitution. Stoutness is a worldwide general medical issue, influencing for all intents and purpose s each district of the world except for sub-Saharan Africa. Conversation Distinguishing proof The World Health Organization (2000) characterizes stoutness as a state of irregular or abundance aggregation of fat tissue (muscle to fat ratio) to a degree that a person's wellbeing might be debilitated. Since the exact estimation of fat tissue requires obtrusive research center measures, in the populace setting, an easier measure on which to base a corpulence definition is required. Albeit flawed, the Body Mass Index (BMI), characterized as weight in kilograms separated by stature in meters squared, has been received by accord in the United States by the National Institutes of Health (1998) and the Centers; for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and universally by WHO (2000). Agreement meanings of overweight and weight have been set at 25 (overweight) and 30 (heftiness), with seriousness classes of corpulence characterized as follows: overweight, 25.0 to 29.9; Class I stoutness, 30.0 to 34.9; Class II stoutness, 35.0 to 39.9; and Class III heftiness, 40.0+. The WHO (2000) wordin g varies marginally, however the cutoff focuses are the equivalent. In developing youngsters, in whom weight and stature are both changing (and at various rates), the meaning of stoutness is innately progressively confounded. Albeit no generally concurred on standard exists for evaluating overweight and corpulence in kids and teenagers, there is a developing agreement that BMI ought to be embraced as an aberrant proportion of adiposity for youngsters and youths, also (Barlow Dietz, pp. 223). Since BMI shifts significantly by age and sex during youth and youthfulness, the particular BMI shorts used to arrange weight must be sexual orientation and age-explicit and must be referenced against a norm. In the United States, the standard utilized is the CDC Revised Growth Reference (Barlow Dietz, pp. 228). Globally, a few principles (Cole et.al, pp. 27; Ogden et al., pp. 1728), including one dependent on a pooled universal example (Cole et.al, pp. 1241), are additionally being used. A few periods being developed have been proposed as basic periods in the improvement of industrious weight and its comorbid outcomes. These incorporate the pre-birth period (when intrauterine exposures may impact adiposity), youth, and puberty. Some proof recommends that bosom taking care of may ensure against later stoutness. Probability of tirelessness in adulthood of corpulence from youth is connected both to age at beginning and seriousness. Sequelae Youth weight has various quick, middle of the road, and long haul wellbeing outcomes (Must Strauss, pp. S3). These incorporate great cardiovascular hazard factors, for example, hypertension, strange blood lipid levels, and disabled glucose resistance. Respiratory conditions incorporate rest confused relaxing. Moreover, early menarche and menstrual anomalies are connected to overweight. Of specific concern is the development of type 2 diabetes, when thought about a grown-up beginning ailment, as an infection of youth. The mental effect may speak to one of the most harming impacts of corpulence given that derision and social seclusion may bring about lower confidence and wretchedness. In an as of late duplicated exemplary investigation, youngsters were solicited to rank request an arrangement from drawings of kids with different impairments (bolsters, wheelchair, missing a hand, facial distortion, weight) in view of which kid they might want best (Latnerm Stunkard, pp. 456). The stout kid was positioned last regardless of the positioning kid's sex, race, financial status, living condition, and own handicap. In another investigation, evaluations of personal satisfaction for kids with heftiness were like those of kids experiencing chemotherapy for disease (Schwimmer et.al, 2003, pp. 1814). In spite of the fact that heftiness in adulthood that has been available from adolescence may worry about an extra concern because of expanded seriousness, much grown-up corpulence emerges through grown-up weight gain. The wellbeing outcomes of stoutness present in adulthood are gigantic, both in size and effect on personal satisfaction. In building up its clinical rules, the NIH report distinguished a broad rundown of wellbeing conditions for which heftiness expanded hazard. These incorporate hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary illness, stroke, gallbladder ailment, osteoarthritis, rest apnea and respiratory issues, numerous tumors, and discouragement. The quantity of passings every year in the United States owing to heftiness has been assessed at 300,000. Hazard Factors In all people, kid or grown-up, stoutness emerges because of vitality awkwardness: When vitality admission surpasses vitality consumption, the majority of the abundance calories are put away as fat tissue. To offer ascent to stoutness, vitality unevenness must happen over a significant stretch of time and likely mirrors a mix of components. Singular practices, ecological components, and heredity, separately and in mix, add to the improvement of weight. The velocity with which the stoutness pestilence rose standards out basic hereditary clarifications. The present condition in the United States has been described as obesogenic, implying that it advances high vitality admissions and low vitality expendituresthe vitality lopsidedness that offers ascend to weight gain. Present day industrialized social orders give copious, moderately modest food; current life is composed to decrease vitality use at work and at home, through innovation and urbanization. For an animal types that developed to store fat in the midst of bounty so as to make due in more slender occasions, numerous people are hereditarily defenseless to put on weight in the present condition. Exorbitant vitality admission is an essential hazard factor for the advancement of youth and grown-up stoutness, in spite of the fact that the particular parts of admission dependable are disputable. Dietary components, for example, diet arrangement, vitality thickness, fat admission, products of the soil utilization, snacks, sugar-rich nourishments, and sodas, have all been distinguished in relationship with corpulence. Expanded utilization of products of the soil can help lessen the admission of dietary fat and calories since they are normally low in fat and vitality thickness contrasted and different nourishments. In spite of current suggestions that people beyond 2 4 years old 2 to 4 servings of foods grown from the ground to 5 servings of vegetables day by day, kids and youths eat a normal of just 3.6 servings of products of the soil every day, and seared potatoes represent a huge extent of those servings. Various other dietary factors, including soda pops, eating, partition siz es, and baby taking care of have likewise been connected to youth heftiness. Studies recommend that the expanded utilization of sugar-improved sodas, nibble nourishments (which are frequently high in fat or/and sugar), and huge measured bits of nourishments have added to the expansion in vitality admissions. Decreased physical action might be the most significant factor in clarifying the expansion of corpulence in the course of recent decades. Physical action among U.S. youth is in decay, with about portion of youngsters matured 12 to 21 revealing that they don't take part in enthusiastic physical action consistently and one fourth announcing no fiery physical action. Though relaxation time physical movement has expanded in men and stayed consistent in ladies in the course of recent decades in the United States, action related with work and home life has declined over a similar period. Stationary conduct and latency, for example, sitting in front of the TV and playing video/PC games, additionally are contributory elements. Gortmaker et al. (1996) revealed a balanced chances proportion (OR) for heftiness of 8.3 for youths who stared at the TV over 5 hours out of each day contrasted with the individuals who watched 0 with 2 hours. Convincing proof originates from mediation contemplates, wh ich show that lessening TV seeing time can help forestall youth corpulence. Grown-ups in a preliminary of support following weight reduction continued their misfortunes best when physical movement was high and TV seeing was low (van Baak et.al, pp. 210). Television watching may advance stoutness by lessening physical movement, bringing down metabolic rate, and expanding vitality consumption. The last may happen because of the way that TV survey might be related with nibbling and may direct dietary patterns commonly through more prominent introduction to publicizing of nourishments high in included sugars and fat or by passing on blended messages about way of life and wellbeing in the substance of promotions. Television seeing is a significant wellspring of idleness among Americans. Screen time, an outline proportion of time spent survey TV and recordings and occupied with PC based action, speaks to the biggest extent of nonsleep, nonschool time for youth. End Corpulence has developed as the major wholesome issue confronting the pediatric and grown-up populaces around the world. The etiology of stoutness is multifactorial and incorporates singular hazard factors, hereditary impacts, and natural effectors. The seriousness of the issue, in term

Evils Of Hazing - Free Essay Example

The Evils Of Hazing You have just moved to a new school, and it is the first day. You thought it was a dream to be on the wrestling team, but in reality it was a nightmare. After practice, you are hog-tied and beaten by your fellow teammates in a ritual known as hazing. For many years, hazing has existed in high schools throughout America without many people knowing; more recently, however, laws are being passed against this potentially deadly ritual as people are becoming educated on the topic. This paper will address what hazing is, how it can be stopped, and my opinion on why it should be stopped. According to the dictionary, hazing is to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work; to harass by banter, ridicule, or criticism; or to haze by way of initiation. There are three different types of hazing: mental, terror, and physical hazing. Mental hazing is messing with the mind. It is used to make the victim look and feel ridiculous. It can include dressing embarrassingl y in public, treating another member as your master, or begging strangers for unusual items (Schleifer 17). Terror hazing is used to terrorize the person. It can include laying in a ditch that you are led to believe is a grave, or drinking from poison bottles, that unknown to you, contain only a soft drink (19). The last type is physical hazing, which may include the person having to binge, starve, or stay awake for an unreasonable amount of time. It also includes just plainly beating a person (20). As stated in Everything You Need to Know About the Dangers of Hazing by Jay Schleifer, No matter how the hazing is carried out, it always sends the same message: we have power over you your mind, your body, your life. If you want to join our group, youll have to accept that. Unfortunately, these three types of hazing continue every year. People who have been hazed before believe that if they had to go through with it, the next person should. The people being hazed on the other hand h ave such a strong desire to be in that group that they will put up with whatever is dealt their way. It is a never ending cycle. So, how can we finally try to break this cycle? Education is the best thing. The more you are aware that there is legislation out there and rules against this, the more prepared you will be to prevent yourself from being in that situation. Find out about your schools policies relating to hazing and who you can report it to. Find the information to tell you if there are anti-hazing laws in your state, in which case you can inform a law enforcement official (Olson 141). As stated by Elizabeth Allan, co-founder of StopHazing. org, Hazing is a part of our culture. That is why it is so important to become educated and redefine these behaviors. Someone who has helped to redefine these behaviors is Eileen Stevens. When her son Chuck died in a college hazing, she wrote to lawmakers, appeared on television, and told her story to magazines. She then formed th e Committee to Halt Useless College Killings, CHUCK for short. When her son first died, and CHUCK was first formed, less than eighteen states outlawed hazing. Today, however, with the help of anti-hazing groups such as this one, forty-two states have passed laws against hazing (Schleifer 38). By pushing to pass laws like these courageous people have, hopefully one day, hazing will be outlawed throughout the United States. Hopefully, it will be outlawed soon, because in my opinion, hazing is wrong and needs to be stopped. Making people suffer for initiation rights or just for the fun of it is wrong. No one should be forced to go through something painful, emotionally or physically, just to join an organization. Even after the hazing is over, there are still consequences for the hazers and for the victim. Not only do the hazers have to worry about being reported and facing the chance of prosecution, but also about future problems within the group. Often times when hazing is used to develop a true appreciation of initiation, the newcomers feel their work is over once they are initiated. Instead of realizing that this is just the beginning of their work, they feel that they have done their share already. So, in the end, it weakens team effort, feeling, Maybe it is my fault, maybe I should not have let them do it, or maybe I am just a wimp. It is similar to rape cases; people blame the victim (Olson 138). As times change, so does hazing; that is why it is so important to put a stop to hazing as soon as possible. Once thought of as strictly a college ritual, hazing has lately become a high school tradition. The trouble is, todays initiations often look more like assault and battery than harmless pranks. It has been reported every year since 1970 that someone has died from a hazing incident. A recent study done at Alfred University, Alfred, New York found that 79% of college athletes had to go through some kind of initiation ritual. But 42% of those student s had also been hazed in high school (135). As stated by Brian Rahill, co-founder of StopHazing. org, When I was hearing about these incidents in 1998, I was shocked. In 1999, I was disturbed. Now there is an outright pattern. If hazing continues at this rate, imagine how it will be when your children are in high school, or even when you’re younger siblings are in high school. Nikki Consentino, a victim of hazing once stated, I have met a lot of parents because their children are not alive to tell about it. Obviously, if laws are not passed against this ritual, more children may die just for trying out for a school team. So do the math yourself. If at least one person has died from a reported hazing every year since 1970, over 30 lives have been taken from what some think of as only a harmless prank, and those are only the reported cases. Through this paper I hope you can see the importance of putting an end to hazing and one day it can and will be done.

Illegal Immigration and Government Involvement - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 895 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/02/20 Category Sociology Essay Level High school Tags: Illegal Immigration Essay Did you like this example? DREAMers and MS-13 are two completely different groups of people, yet they are grouped together through one huge controversy: illegal immigration. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, â€Å"[an] illegal immigrant [is] someone who lives or works in another country when they do not have the legal right to do this.† There are countless questions and issues that arise from discussing illegal immigration, but one of the biggest issues right now in this country is whether illegal immigrants should receive government benefits or not. Due to the increasing debt the United States is in and the level of poverty in the United States, illegal immigrants should not receive government benefits. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Illegal Immigration and Government Involvement" essay for you Create order With the United States debt reaching tens of trillions of dollars, the government should look at saving itself rather than people who are not supposed to be here. According to the â€Å"U.S. Debt Clock†, the debt the United States is currently in is 21.49 trillion dollars. Also, according to the â€Å"U.S. Debt Clock†, the United States has the highest debt in the world, beating China by roughly 19 trillion dollars. Many my argue that illegal immigrants pay their fair share of taxes, but this is not the case. According to Matt O’Brien and Spencer Raley, researchers for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, gross national cost of illegal immigrants is 134,863,455,364, while the taxes paid by illegal immigrants is 18,968,857,700, equaling out to a national deficit of 116 billion dollars. The money is coming out of taxpayers’ pockets, both native born and legal immigrants. This may seem miniscule compared to the national debt, but according to â€Å"Federal Spending: Where Does the Money Go†, illegal immigration would be the seventh most costly federal spending, which is more than what the United State s spends on education each year. This means that the federal and state governments together spend more money on criminals than they do on educating the future leaders of this country. Claire Felter and Danielle Renwick write, â€Å"The undocumented population is about eleven million and has leveled off since the 2008 economic crisis.† With these numbers, one illegal immigrant costs the United States 10,545 dollars each year. According to O’Brien and Raley, â€Å"the federal government spends 1.6 billion dollars on education of illegal immigrants, 17.1 billion dollars on medical cost of illegal immigrants, 13.1 billion dollars on justice expenditures of illegal immigrants, and 5.8 billion dollars on welfare programs for illegal immigrants.† The United States does not have room in the budget for this. No matter someone’s opinion on illegal immigration and the ethics behind the whole issue, it is evident that illegal immigration is costing the United States money it just does not have. Poverty of United States citizens is a gigantic problem that will only get worse if the government does not turn to helping its own people. According to Paul Nyhan, senior writer for the Marguerite Casey Foundation, â€Å"[t]he number of people living in poverty fell again last year, reaching the lowest level since the Great Recession began in 2007, with 12.7 percent of Americans living below the federal poverty line, the U.S. Census Bureau reported on Sept. 12.† Although it is wonderful news that poverty made a decline, still 12.7 percent of people are living below the poverty line. These are men, women, and children who are citizens of the United States, yet they still suffer each day. In fact, about a third of those living in poverty are children (Nyhan). Poverty is a huge problem in the United States, and illegal immigrants are not helping. According to Gwynn Guilford, Quartz reporter, â€Å"[b]y 2014, unauthorized immigrants, on average, earned only 3.4% less than their legal peers.† Illegal immigrants cost companies thirty-four cents less per ten dollars, which means that compared to their peers making minimum wage, illegal immigrants cost companies ten dollars less each work week. With hundreds of illegal immigrants working for years in these companies, it is cheaper for companies to hire them. This is taking jobs away from American families that need them. Many people may believe that illegal immigrants support the economy, such as Steven Zahniser, Thomas Hertz, Peter B. Dixon, and Maureen T. Rimmer, who write that fifty percent of illegal immigrants work in agriculture and if there was a loss if illegal immigrants, fruit and vegetable production would drop from two to five percent. According to the â€Å"U.S. debt clock†, there are eleven million people unemployed right now. If the eleven million illegal immigrants did not work in America, then those jobs would be open to those unemployed. Illegal immigration does not help the economy; it keeps hard wo rking Americans from having a job. Government benefits should be strictly for Americans because the escalating debt is taking away any extra money that is in the budget and poverty in America is still an epidemic. Whether one supports illegal immigration or not, it is obvious that there is no room for government spending on illegal immigrants. If one strictly looks at the laws of the United States and monetary availability of the United States, its obvious that America does not have the ability to care for those that are not supposed to be here. The debt keeps piling up and poverty is destroying the country. To help others, one must help him or herself first. This is no different in a country. America must fix itself first if this country wants to ever truly help others.

Treatment of Femininity in Pygmalion and Medea free essay sample

In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting the way in which two different authors portray femininity in their respective dramatic texts. The two works I am using are Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw and Medea by Euripides. I will be looking at how the way men and women are portrayed can affect the way we interpret the texts, and showing that femininity isn’t necessarily a trait restricted just to women. I believe that femininity reflects expected female behaviour. There are certain traits which are believed to be typically male or female. Male traits tend to be more physical such as the fact that they are dominant, stronger whereas female traits are much softer, more emotional. In ancient Athenian society such things as ‘bravery in battle’ and ‘general competitive excellence in a public arena’(1) were considered masculine whereas women were relegated to ‘looking after the household and bringing up their children’(2). However, femininity has changed as times have changed. It reflects the acceptable social behaviour of the period. As women were seen as more equal to men, the restrictions on them lessened. So by the time Pygmalion was written in 1912 it was acceptable for women to support themselves: something that was unheard of in Medea’s time. When Pygmalion was written the woman’s movement was well underway and women were starting to demand rights and become more independent. It was no longer assumed that women would marry just to be looked after. Men no longer automatically took the controlling role. Eliza is a prime example of this as although she is not very well off she is self sufficient as a flower-girl. Medea on the other hand is set at a time when women were completely submissive to their husbands. Once married all of their property automatically became their husbands. Medea has no legal political rights; not only because she is a women but also because she is an outsider. Medea’s reference to women being ‘weak and timid in most matters’ (3) (line 260) reflects the general view of women by society. The way the two pieces are written and acted are also completely different. Medea would have been played by an all male cast to a predominantly, if not exclusively male audience, whereas Pygmalion was acted by both men and women. In Medea actors would have worn female masks, which lack emotion and cover up facial expressions. Right from the beginning the play takes on an unrealistic air as women and men wouldn’t have been able to debate in public as Medea and Jason did. Theatrical space is very important. It was traditional in ancient Athenian time for women to occupy inside space, however due to the physical arrangement of the theatre; this would have meant that Medea preformed the whole play from behind the Skene. Bringing Medea outside made for better viewing and meant that she was able to ‘compete(s) on equal terms with her male opponents’(4) . Both Eliza and Medea display a number of what would be considered masculine traits. Right from the beginning we learn that Medea has a very forceful personality and is a very strong character. She points out to Jason that she ‘saved his life’ (5)(line 475) and helped him get where he is by making sacrifices herself. Although Jason disagrees with her he doesn’t take the credit himself, instead he credits the Gods. We can also look at Eliza in the same way. Although she is lower class she also comes across as strong and wilful and capable of looking after and supporting herself rather than needing a man to do it. Eliza shows her stereotypically female side because she is fairly emotional and prone to outbreaks of crying. Medea uses her femininity to her advantage. She is very strong and forceful when dealing with Jason; however she assumes the submissive position of kneeling down when talking to Creon and cries to appeal to his sensitive side. She also turns on the charm with Aegeus and portrays herself as the suffering victim to ensure his help once she has had her revenge. Both Eliza and Medea are treated as property by the dominant men in their lives. Eliza’s father is happy to sell her to Higgins just to get her off his hands and Jason is quite happy to cast Medea aside when he finds a new wife. Both men however believe they are acting in the women’s best interest. Jason because he believes it will secure his family’s future and Mr Doolittle because he can’t afford to look after his daughter and thinks she will be better of with Higgins. Medea and Eliza are both put in vulnerable positions, Medea because if Jason leaves her she will be an outsider and neither her nor her sons will have any rights. Eliza is left in a difficult position because before Higgins decided to turn her in to a lady she had a job and could support herself, now however she is unable to get a job and needs to rely on someone else to look after her. This concern is reflected throughout the play by various characters and even by Eliza herself when she asks ‘why did you take my independence from me? ’(6) (Act 5, pg 101) Higgins comes across as bossy and a bully. He is extremely good at his job and believes that affords him the right to treat people as badly as he does. He almost doesn’t see Eliza as a woman but rather as a project so he isn’t worried about treating her ‘like a lady’ as long as she can behave like one when necessary. He doesn’t have any pre-conceptions on how women should be and is almost dismissive of those that marry just to be looked after. He even goes as far as saying that he thinks ‘a woman fetching a man’s slippers is a disgusting sight’ (Act 5, pg 100) (7). This re-emphasises Shaw’s belief and support of the women’s movement of the time. Shaw is eager to show that femininity isn’t necessarily a subservient thing. All of the main male characters in both plays display in part feminine characteristics, which both Medea and Eliza use to their advantage. When speaking to Creon Medea acts submissively by kneeling when speaking to him and appealing to his emotional side. Creon himself even admits that his ‘soft heart has often betrayed [him] (line 348-9)(8) , something which would be seen as a very feminine trait and definitely not something a King should admit to, as he should be all powerful and domineering. Compared to other women in the play Medea is by far the strongest. Although the Nurse also uses outdoor space she is scared of Medea and what she is capable of. The Chorus, which is made up of Corinthian women, plays a very prominent, important part in the play; however they are not strong enough to challenge Medea directly. They are in agreement that Jason’s behaviour is wrong but they don’t agree with the way Medea is going about seeking revenge. In Pygmalion Shaw uses Mrs Higgins to reinforce the theme of strong independent women. Mrs Higgins is clearly a woman of means and under no illusions about her son and his shortfalls. She is definitely the more dominant of the two characters and is more than happy to put Higgins in his place. She refers to him as a ‘silly boy’ which immediately shatters the illusion of him being masculine and dominant. Mrs Pearce, although of a different social class is also a fairly strong character and more than a match for Higgins. We see this in the way that she confronts him over his treatment of Eliza telling him that he ‘must be reasonable’ and he ‘cant walk over everybody’ (Act 2, pg 30) (9) Both plays end with the women leaving the men in their lives, enforcing the message that the females are the dominant characters. Shaw was a ‘self-proclaimed feminist’ and keen to portray Eliza as independent, hence the reason his play doesn’t end with Eliza conforming to type by marrying Higgins. The authors also use language as a way of differentiating between men and women. While Medea is in the private space her language is very emotive, full of anger and she can be heard ‘sobbing and wailing’ (line 202)(10) but as soon as she comes outside into the male domain her language automatically becomes more controlled and calm. Shaw also uses language to show a rougher more masculine side to Eliza when she says she wants to ‘smash’ Higgins face (Act 4, pg 76) (11). Medea uses very masculine language especially when talking about destroying her enemies. As Margaret Williamson(12) points out it gives Medea a ‘heroic dignity’ and further heightens the difference between her public and private voice. Eliza gets her own back on Higgins by denouncing his work in turning her into a lady. She credits Pickering for this knowing that it would get to Higgins. In contrast Medea uses Jason’s children to hurt him, which is much more drastic and spiteful. To sum up there are a number of ways that the authors of these plays portray femininity, such as the use of distinct language and submissive gestures. Both of the plays are centred around extremely competent women which shows how femininity can definitely be used to an advantage. The fact that the men in each of the plays also display feminine traits also shows that femininity itself is not strictly about women.

The Test Essay Example For Students

The Test Essay Eyelids drooping, eyes watering from the constant yawns, the birds are not even awake singing their happy songs, but here I am up at four thirty in the morning cracking open my books to study. Why am I doing this? I just went to bed less than seven hours ago after a two hour study session. The reason I put myself through this ordeal is to get promoted. In the Air Force we take test to progress in our careers and get make the next rank or stripe. This time Im studying to make Master Sergeant, E-7. I usually start out 6 months before the test, this time its 8. Last year I missed being promoted by 4 points. I refuse to let that happen again. That is why Im studying like my life depended on it.My testing date is only a couple of days away and I start to panic. Did I cover all the material? What if I freeze up in the testing room? What if Im late and they dont let me test? I was starting to lose my mind. I had studied so much that the things I thought I knew started to confuse me. Facts s tarted running together like a race in my mind, useless dates in Air Force history that meant absolutely nothing to me at this point in my exhaustion. We will write a custom essay on The Test specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Why dont you take a break, honey my husband said to me as he found me staring into the computer screen. Its still early come back to bed. I stared at him like he was the devil. Thanks for reminding me, I thought to myself. Only a couple more hours and Id have to get Lexus out of bed, fix lunches for the day, and get myself together. Not yet, I told him. Just let me go over this last section and then Ill be done. Yeah right, he said as he left the room. Sleep was something I was not interested in these days. As if I did not have enough to worry about. After I got this test behind me I would be fine. I could get back to being normal and doing some of the things that I had not been able to do. I wanted to get back outside to play with my daughter; the playground was calling my name. I wanted to go to bed at a decent hour. I wanted to not have to look at another military book for a very long time. I had visions of myself burning all the books I had to study for this test. Yeah that what Ill do once this is over I thought. Ill build a big bonfire in the backyard after February. That would have to wait for now, its time to get back to the books. I finally finished my last marathon of studying. Now it was time to get ready for work. I went to work that day just a little stressed. I was scheduled to test in 2 days and I could not keep my mind on things. My boss suggested that I take the rest of the day off. This was a good move. I would ha ve lost my head if I heard someone else ask me How you feel, are you going to make it this year? In the Air Force its tradition that a person testing for promotion will get the day prior to the test off. This year I had a day and a half. I went home that day and did not even look at my books. I thought if I dont know it know I wont know it. The next day was good, I decided not to study again and spend some quality time with my daughter. That day I knew why I was pushing myself so hard. I wanted my family to be proud of my accomplishments and me. That night I drifted off to dreamland. I dreamt that I was doing the test, and I wasnt worried at all. I was calm. The test proctor gave me the test, and when I turned it over, there was all this stuff I had never seen before. It was like I had studied the wrong information. I began to panic, and the test proctor just stood there laughing at me, pointing at me and yelling, youll never get promoted now. To say that I was stressed out would be an understatement. I was beyond stressed; I was scared as hell. I woke up the next morning and I felt like I had boxed ten rounds with Mike Tyson. I was exhausted. I took a shower, made breakfast, and watched the news. My test was not unt il 8 oclock and I had a little time. I was tempted to pick up those books one last time, but I chose not too. I was so nervous, you would have thought I had just got caught stealing from the local five and dime store. As I drove to the base I talked myself down. I had to tell myself you know this information, youve studied it for almost a year. What was I worried about? By the time I got the testing room, and everyone was ready to begin, I was pretty calm. I had decided at this point that since I would just answer every question on the test. Guessing was better than not answering the question at all. It was time. The test proctor began going over the directions and calls us up one by one. As we all received our booklets we were instructed not to open them until we were told to do so. Open your books the test proctor stated. Here it is now or never. I slowly opened up the book to the first page. To my surprise I knew the answer to the first question. This was weird, many of the quest ions on my test looked oddly familiar to me. It seemed as though I had seen some of this information before. I began to fill in the bubble on the answer sheet, not stopping until I had answered all 100 questions. I felt pretty good, but there was still one more test to go. We took an hour break. After the hour break it was time to start part 2 of my saga. The second part of the testing. This time the nerves rolled back in. Anxiety set in once more. Once again I had to say to myself, V you know this information like the back of your hand. Lets do this and get it over with. Again there I was again, attempting to answer more questions, this time I did not know what the heck they were trying to ask me. Questions 2, 3, and 4 all passed me by like a bus driving pass its designated bus stop. I stared to get worried. Questions 5 hey I know this. It was starting to look up. I finished the second test a lot better than I thought I would after reading those first five questions. I turned in my test to the test proctor and said goodbye. I walked out of that room feeling good. It was over. Now the hard part, waiting. .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .postImageUrl , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:hover , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:visited , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:active { border:0!important; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:active , .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8884740891631ebffd8499d6432d9a0c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: State Vs. Shoemaker EssayIn the military or at least the Air Force you test for your promotion and then 4 months later you find out the results. The reason behind the long wait is that there can be anywhere from 9,000 to 11,000 people testing for a certain promotion or stripe. In my case for Master sergeant there were 11,000 other people in the Air Force testing for the same stripe. The Air Force only promotes an average of 35% of those who test. Its the end of June now. Results of the test are to be released today, 27 June. I am one of those lucky ones to be promoted. I had heard some rumors that my name was on the list. Although I was hoping it was true, I was a little u pset about what to do if it was on the list. I study all the time and if I was on this list then what do I do with my time? 26 June comes around and the commander wants to see me the day before results come out. This could be a good thing or this could be a bad thing. I go to the office and he sits me down. He starts to go into his speech about what his policy is on promotions and the way he likes to do it. Im thinking to myself get on with this before I get sick all over this nice, big, cherry wood desk. Sergeant Ivy, he says with a straight look on his face, you have been promoted to Master Sergeant. Are you sure, is all I can say. It was true and right then he handed be an Italian bottle of wine with my new stripes glued on to it. I thought I would cry right there in the commanders office. I had this huge grin on my face unable to hold back the tears. I had done it. It was over. I walked out of the commanders office and there was all my co-workers, all seventeen of them clapping and cheering.I felt good. Now I can spend some much-needed time with my family. Without them I would not have been able to make it. They allowed me to be locked away for hours at a time in my study room. They were very supportive and this stripe is for them. Critical Analysis of Mendelsons and Parkins Introducing Direct Democracy in Canada

Critical Analysis of Mendelsons and Parkins Introducing Direct Democracy in Canada In the article titled Introducing Direct Democracy in Canada, Mendelsohn and Parkin attempted proving to the readers that the holding of more referendums would improve Canadian democracy, as it would involve the general public in the making of policies and decisions that directly affected their lives. They state that the Canadian executive is given an enormous amount of power when he comes into office, which does not give others-outside of his "inner circle"-an opportunity to influence public policy. The reforms needed to fix this issue, according to Mendelsohn and Parkin, are referendums. However, although they write that referendums are a great way to get the public involved, they also state that there are severe consequences that can occur if they are not used under the right conditions.Mendelsohn and Parkin's central idea is that referendums are needed in order to strengthen the democratic nature of Canada. If these referendums were used appropriately, they would have a number of important uses: protect minority interests so that majority does not always rule, develop a fair political process in which people have an equal chance of speaking their minds and raising their concerns in order to influence public views, provide access to information that the citizens will need in order to be informed and make decisions that work in their best interests, and hold political accountability so that voters would know who to blame if something was to go wrong.Michael Parkin (bw portrait)They present consequences that could potentially occur in the case that referendums were not used correctly. An example would be voters who are not given the opportunity to listen to the different sides of a given issue and who go ahead and cast a vote not having really thought about it. The latter would directly go against the very nature and...

Arterial Blood Gas

Symptoms of Arterial Blood Gas: ABG is ordered as a means to evaluate or control the patient's respiration and metabolic acid / base balance. This test evaluates the pH of the patient's blood and is used as an indicator of specific causes of acidosis or alkalosis. ABG is also used to measure the adequacy of acid / base balance treatment. ABG can also be used to measure oxygenation saturation. Types of tests and testing procedure: ABG is usually obtained by taking arterial blood. If OHS is suspected, various tests are necessary for confirmation. The most important initial test is to prove the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. This requires arterial blood gas measurements, including the collection of blood samples from the arteries, usually the radial arteries. Given that this test can be complicated for each patient with sleep-related breathing problems, measuring the level of bicarbonate in normal (vein) blood is a reasonable I believe it will be a screening test . When rising (more than 27 mmol / l), it is necessary to measure blood gas The arterial blood gas (ABG) test measures acidity (pH) and oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in arterial blood. This test is used to ascertain the extent to which lungs pump oxygen into the bloodstream and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. When blood passes through the lungs, oxygen enters the bloodstream and carbon dioxide flows from the blood into the lungs. The ABG test uses blood taken from arteries that can measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels before entering body tissues. Dr. Ori can do this test or trained person (Timby, 2009). Mr. J's blood test was sent to microbiology for testing, so it was useful for diagnosis and pointed out the extent of her influence on her illness. ABG provides interdisciplinary team information on oxygenation of the patient, adequacy of ventilation, acid-base level. Skinner (2005) and Adam (2009) agree that arterial blood gas analysis is an important part of patient's ventilation therapy and its acid-base balance diagnosis and management. Skinner continues to say that the usefulness of this intervention depends on the ability of medical professionals to analyze and interpret all aspects of gas. Nettina (2005) describes a test procedure called Allen, a test for evaluating a puncture site before puncture. This evaluates the circulation in the hand and whether it is appropriate to use the radial artery for puncture. The place is cleaned with alcohol, the allergic condition reduces discomfort and allows the use of anesthetic to increase the chances of success

Why We Cant Wait Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Why We Cant Wait - Essay Example People of color especially African Americans were seen as people who belonged to the lower or second class in society. As a result, African Americans were not allowed to access certain areas, and were not admitted to same schools as whites. It is clear that Martin Luther stated that African Americans could no longer wait for the followings things; ii. Lack of trust in government and politicians especially after the perceived failures of President Kennedy in that during his reign, Kennedy failed to establish a stance housing desegregation policy and did not address the issue of African American voting rights in states such as Virginia and Texas. It is vivid from the article that the media in American helped to propagate racial sentiments against black people. For instance, the media propagated racial segregation in their articles where they referred to black people as darkies, coons, and niggers. Their messages in the articles spread anti-black information and stereotypes. In schools, white children saw black children as inferior and worthless. All social institutions such as schools and churches reinforced oppression of the people of color particularly African Americans (Luther 56). Many things happening in the American society prompted Luther to write the book. For instance, King argues that the white race mistreated black people. He documents the following practices and norms to depict how pervasive and inclusive racial segregation was entrenched in society. Violence was used to place African Americans at the bottom of the racial hierarchy. For instance, the Jim Crow used war on drug to discriminate black people whereby, police applied excess force to arrest black men on conception that they were drug dealers. This reveals how the criminal justice system in America was racist in trying to connect the dots between earlier forms of social and current system of mass incarceration (Luther 61). There was rebirth of the

Chinese Economic Development Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6000 words

Chinese Economic Development - Coursework Example The large scale of foreign direct investment which has entered into Chinese markets, could improve the economic development of eastern coastal areas through accelerating the formation and centralization of capital, Technology Overflows, upgrading of the industrials structure and the human capital formation. On the contrary, the fast speed of the economic development of eastern parts would also increase the earning of the local residents, enlarging the demand of the market, improving the Total Factor Productivity, promoting the external environment and reducing costs, which could possibly bring into being a cluster economic effect, accordingly, there would be more foreign direct investment entry into the market. From all the industrials, the most distinct industrial is the high-tech industrial, which has recently influenced Chinese economic development the most. In this proposal, we will write about how the FDI brought an impact into the Chinese economy, which would mainly focus on th e high-tech industries, and give the result and some suggestions after the particular analysis. (Since the beginning of the far-reaching economic reforms of 1978, China's economy has been growing at a breakneck pace of 9.5 percent a year1. If it were now to grow at 8 percent per year, doubling every nine years, income per person in 2031 for China's projected population of 1.45 billion would reach $38,000. (At a more conservative 6 percent annual growth rate, the economy would double every 12 years, overtaking the current U.S. income per person in 2040.))how have you got these figures Rest of it is simple calculation. After more than twenty years' reform and opening-up, China is gradually integrating into the global economy. The degree of internationalization has also improved to a great extent, as well. It's been the first in developing countries and the second in the world country attracting the most foreign capital during many years. The level of investments by Multi-National Enterprises in the Chinese market has increased over a period of time. As is presented in Table-1 Table1: Directly investment from 1995-2002 Year Increased Foreign Enterprises (Number) Agreed Foreign Investment (Billion US dollars) Actual Foreign Investment (Billion US dollars) 1995 4056 12.97 4.78 1996 2737 9.83 5.07 1997 2108 9.27 5.79 1998 1843 7.57 6.65 1999 1936 6.98 6.4 2000 2648 10.61 6.42 2001 3581 15.1 7.12 2002 5801 19.67 10.37 MNEs direct investment has become an important power in Chinese economy which cannot be neglected and which could obviously impact on Chinese fixed investment and capital stock. As figure 2 shows: Table 2:The proportion of Actual Usage of investment from Multinational to permanent assets Year 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 Proportion 12.13 17.08 15.65 15.1 14.79 13.23 11.17 10.32 10.51 10.1 ----where is this table from This table was in your original write up! The Epic Poem, Beowulf - Vengeance and Revenge in Beowulf Essay

Vengeance and Revenge in Beowulf    The oldest of the great lengthy poems written in English and perhaps the lone survivor of a genre of Anglo-Saxon epics, Beowulf, was written by an unknown Christian author at a date that is only estimated.   Even so, it is a remarkable narrative story in which the poet reinvigorates the heroic language, style, and values of Germanic oral poetry.   He intertwines a number of themes including good and evil, youth and old age, paganism and Christianity and the heroic ideal code, into his principal narrative and numerous digressions and episodes; all of which were extremely important to his audience at the time.   Vengeance, part of the heroic code, was regarded differently by the two distinct religions.   Christianity teaches to forgive those who trespass against us, whereas in the pagan world, revenge is typical and not considered an evil act.   In Beowulf, the ancient German proverb "revenge does not long remain unrevenged" is strictly adhered to and verifies that revenge is part of pagan tradition. Two human relationships were deeply significant to the Germanic society.   The most important, the relationship between the warrior and his lord was based on a common trust and respect.   The warrior vows loyalty to his lord and serves and defends him and in turn the lord takes care of the warrior and rewards him lavishly for his valour.   The second human relationship was between kinsmen.   As Baker and Ogilvy suggest, a special form of loyalty was involved in the blood feud. (P.107)   If one of his kinsmen had been slain, a man had an ethical obligation either to kill the slayer or to exact the payment of wergild in compensation.   The price was determined upon the rank or social status of the victim... ... view was "an eye for an eye," if a man kills your kinsmen you exact revenge.   On the contrary, the Christian view was more like as Mohandas Gandhi said "An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind."   Christians believed God would inevitability do what is right and would rather turn the other cheek then have it result in more blood and murder.   Throughout the poem, the poet strives to accommodate these two sets of values.   Though he is Christian, he cannot negate the fundamental pagan values of the narrative story. Euro Disney: from Dream to Nightmare (1987-1994)

For years, the Disney Theme Park Empire was built upon three crown jewels located in California, Florida, and Japan. Combining the familiar, family-friendly characters and images upon which the Disney reputation was built. With clean and well-operated theme parks helped Disney set new standards for efficient, friendly customer service in the theme park industry. Its parks became major international tourist attractions. However, when Euro Disney opened in Paris in 1992, the standard model of Disney theme parks ran into trouble.Tackling the many problems faced by Euro Disney operations has posed many new challenges to Disney, forcing them to reconsider their standard model for success. Disney must find ways to adapt their theme park model in a manner which preserves the best of Disney. 9. 1 The challenges facing Euro Disney Early hopes for a similar success soured soon after Euro Disney opened, and the experience of opening Euro Disney delivered unexpected surprises to Disney managemen t. The park soon encountered several major problems: AttendanceDisney’s consulting firm has projected first year park attendance to range between 11. 7 and 17. 8 million attendees. To be cautious, Disney used the littlest figures and predicted eleven million attendees. While initial hotel bookings at the theme park during the summer looked promising, as the theme park entered its first winter, bookings dropped to twenty percent or less of monthly projects. Staffing Staffing shortages created a negative cycle in which extra workloads on employees resulted in increased turnover, which in turn hurt Disney’s ability to retain and develop its employees.Poor union relations caused by reactions to Disney’s exacting requirements for dress and appearance, such as a ban on facial hair and colored stockings, as well as to Disney’s high standards of customer service, further hurt their ability to attract employees. Customer Service Euro Disney was failing to deliver the high level of customer service standard to Disney theme parks, as well as failing to provide the service needs that were unique to the European market. Many employees failed to conform to the high standards of customer service that were expected in Disney theme parks. Lack of local management and autonomy Walt Disney Company owned a 49% share in Euro Disney. This resulted in management by remote control, in which decisions were often made by people who were far removed from the day-to-day operations of the park, and who did not have a strong understanding of the culture and the market. 9. 2 Recommendations Upon reviewing the key problems faced by Euro Disney, there are several issues which require attention. These include: Improving customer service Accommodations and services should be made to better fit the needs and desires of the multi-lingual and multi-cultural European customer base. Greater efforts should be made to identify and retain employees that are compatible with the corporate values of Disney with regards to customer service. Decentralize management Disney should hire local consultants to provide insight of local governmental ordinances, as well as customs that the business should follow.Decision making should be more decentralized, away from the U. S. parent company. Procedures should be made specifically for France. Communications with its employees and the overall morale among employees have to be improved. Options to overcome the housing shortage should be explored to allow workers to live closer to the theme park. In addition, Disney should make a greater effort to increase the diversity of its workforce, to provide a better level of service for visitors from outside of France.Better culture adaptation and understanding of the European market Disney must better understand and meet the different habits, expectations, and needs of the European theme park visitors. In addition, a greater role should be given to European investors in planning and decision making, to provide more of a European perspective in managing the operations of the theme park. Maintain operational flexibility As the organization is still dealing with a large range of unknowns, flexible problem-solving attitudes should be encouraged to help allow Disney to learn and adapt to its new environment.Disney has achieved a strong market position in other locations, and there is no reason to believe the organization cannot achieve a similar success in Europe, provided it is willing to make the same long-term commitment. Develop more realistic planning Plans for a second phase should not have been allowed to advance until such time that the problems facing the first phase were corrected, giving them a more secure base of knowledge upon which plans and decisions could be made. Otherwise, the company risks duplicating and compounding the problems encountered with its first phase.

What Should I Write a Book About

What to Write About in a Book If you were to write a book, on what theme or subject matter would it be based, and why? In this day and age of economic recession caused by speculative markets activity, big businesses and banks failure, which cannot be sustained due to dwindling disposable income, people should learn how to run their small business enterprises. I would like to bring a proof to the others that they, actually, can become business people, even if there are no prerequisites to achieve this goal. Moreover, I would like to inspire everyone with the thought that their respective efforts at organization of business would actually be a force for progress that any underdeveloped economy needs. Small business enterprises can fuel the economy, bringing it up to its former dynamic state. Through the book, I would like to share with the biggest benefits of entrepreneurship, such as the potential to actually make more money than traditional employment-based efforts. There is a great advantage behind working for personal business model instead of someone else’s. Entrepreneurship gives one the chance to write their own story of success, determine their own legacy and climb up the career ladder. For newbies, personal inspiration and determination to succeed is priceless. This stimulation is spurred by the tremendous feeling of freedom an entrepreneur could have while making the way towards success. Entrepreneurship is probably the best equal-opportunity employer option. The owner of the business practices fairness all throughout. Being a part of the revenue generation, the entrepreneur learns the art of sustainability. Running a small personal business enterprise is economically manageable and viable, as well. Business tools, such as teleconferencing, email, and a host of Web communication tools that an entrepreneur would need, are relatively cheap nowadays. These are the very reasons for me to write a book on entrepreneurship. I would like to teach and inspire people about its benefits and relatively easy processes to follow.
